CWG over, now Olympics

November 18, 2010

On the evening of 14th October 2010 every Indian heaved a sigh of relief- from CWG Organizing Committee to bureaucrats, from the athletes to the government. The commonwealth games had successfully concluded.

Delhi for those 12 days had been completely revamped. A huge fleet of low floor buses, flyovers, world class sports infrastructure could be seen all over Delhi. During the games a festive spell had been cast upon the city. Metro stations being lit up, fests and fairs being organized and people coming out in large numbers to celebrate.

After months and months of criticism the CWG had been finally crowned as a success. The very next day every media form was ranting about how wonderful the entire experience had been. Holding the 2016 Olympics soon became the next target.

In the name of national pride we all are willing to spend few 1000 crores on over-sized balloons, confetti and posters. We will happily cut down 1000 trees for a new stadium. Moreover, we will heartlessly divert money meant for food schemes or another 15 days of games.

Rather than removing gareebi the government chose to remove gareebs and act as if Delhi was all good. ‘Athithi devo bhava’ but what about the citizens of this country? Are they to be second class citizens even in their country?

In the name of national pride don’t you think that we should eradicate poverty first and then hold a gala which puts ‘India on the Global Platform’? Shouldn’t our country be presentable and only then showcased?

Apart from the problem of gareebi….I wonder how the govt plans to deal with the huge losses the country has incurred at the hands of the games and the ‘wonderful’ publicity.
Another grand sporting event in the country…that too, bigger than the CWG will most likely rip the country apart!
