Breaking Stereotypes

December 19, 2010

Well majority of the times one reads about breaking away from stereotypes its considered to be a development. But yesterday when I opened my newspaper I shocked.

“108-year-old raped by neighbour in Jabalpur” that is what one of the headlines said. I was stunned and sat there like a dummy! My friend Bong always spoke of Jabalpur, her home town, with such pride and happiness. How nice and friendly the place is etc.

108-year-old raped by neighbour in Jabalpur – Hindustan Times.

I couldn’t and still can’t believe that anyone could stoop to such a level. A 108 year old bed-ridden woman was raped by her son’s friend. It’s sick to say the least. I’m against corporal punishment but this time i’ll make an exception. And i hope it’s Taliban style.

But there is something good(i know it’s not a happy word) that comes out of it. Over the years despite the increasing number of rape cases majority of the men (and women) still believe that rape is a woman’s fault, she must have provoked him- flirted with him, worn skimpy clothes or not behaved like a woman (i.e. challenged him).

I wonder how a 108 year old woman could have done any one of the above mentioned things. She was bed-ridden!!

So shouldn’t people learn from this incident and realize that rape isn’t BROUGHT ON by a woman. Rape is the sick delusion of men with “power”. Moreover it shows that women in reality aren’t safe, despite the fact that we hear words like liberty, freedom, equality more than namaste.

This blog is for all those who believe:

1. that rape is a woman’s fault.

2. that the city (any city) is safe for woman

3. that it is wrong to reserve a compartment in the metro for woman cause a woman isn’t groped every time she steps out. (Whether a compartment should be or not be reserved is different from saying that men don’t harm women)

It’s not the age or the place, it’s some mentally derailed people, species of which we can find everywhere, who do this and get away with it. If I had any say in the matter, I’d say castrate these losers.

SO true! I too want to castrate,no PUBLICLY castrate these men, so that no one would ever dare do such a thing again.
